Publishers Weekly Review!

Ridley’s debut is an enticing marriage of Regency romance and murder mystery. Desperate to escape her abusive stepfather, Evangeline Pemberton runs to family friend Lady Stanton, whose daughter, Susan, was recently disgraced. Unable to marry a reputable man, Susan wants to snare Gavin Lioncroft, owner of gloomy Blackberry Manor and reputed murderer, and she demands Evangeline’s help. When Evangeline meets Gavin, she is surprised by their mutual attraction and shocked to find that her psychic visions vanish when she touches him. After a mysterious death occurs in Blackberry Manor, Evangeline uses her gift to unearth the true culprit. Evangeline, a young yet determined heroine, is the true star of the novel as she allows herself to love while making serious plans for her future. Plenty of violence, romantic tension, and sensual love scenes will leave readers eager for the sequel. (Mar.)

Guest Blog: Afton Locke

Filed under: Books & Authors — ERiCA @ 3:36 am

Today, Afton Locke is sharing an excerpt of CANDELABRA, an Ellora’s Cave Quickie available here!

Tandy travels to Scotland’s Loch Enya castle to attend a BDSM convention she hopes will overcome her control-freak tendencies. When Bryne pulls her into his room of fire, she fears she’s stepped into the lair of a crazy man. But as he mesmerizes her and sears her with his hot passions, she consents to a BDSM session of hot wax play that turns out to be the most intense journey of her life. Entrusting her body and mind to him might heal her, but the elemental fire fairy has an agenda of his own that threatens to consume them both in flames.

“Welcome to Loch Enya Castle,” the ruddy-faced bus driver announced. “Are ye ready for the thrills awaitin’ ye?”

Thrills? Oh yeah. I’m thrilled enough to throw myself under the tires of this bus.

There should be a law against such cheerful bus drivers, Tandy Davis thought as she tried to rub the dampness out of her long, red hair. She was wet and miserable and her sinuses threatened to explode any minute from a lousy head cold.

“This historic castle is five-hundred years old,” the driver went on. “Rumors say it’s haunted but if you hear any bumps or screams, it’s most likely The Smoky Daggers, the wildest BDSM group in all of Scotland. You might be doing some screamin’ of yer own, I daresay,” he said, guffawing at his own joke. (more…)

Gothic Historical Romance Cover Blurbs

Filed under: Books & Authors, Publishing Industry — Tags: — ERiCA @ 5:14 am

I created the Too Wicked To Kiss page on my website before my book had a cover, much less back cover copy. Writing a proposal synopsis for a publisher is bad enough–how was I going to describe the story for the Internet in just a few paragraphs? I thought over the main points I wanted to convey, and came up with:

Miss Evangeline Pemberton can see the Future. Sometimes. The Past, too, although that tends to be less useful, as she can’t change what’s already happened.

One might think the most irksome characteristic of her alleged “gift” is that said visions are followed by debilitating headaches. Or that they’ve got her running for her life. But no. By far the most vexing quirk is that these fantasies accompany all skin-to-skin contact. Which means she can’t touch anyone. Not even the tall, dark, and brooding recluse in her Present.

Gavin Lioncroft is a wealthy committed bachelor with nothing but time on his hands. Well, and blood. (But he’s not telling how that got there.) And an impromptu house party. (He hasn’t the slightest idea how that happened.)

His very first night back in the bosom of High Society and the man he threatens to kill turns up dead. Good. The cad had it coming. But just because he’s dodged the hangman’s noose before, doesn’t mean Gavin will get away with murder again. And this time, there’s no fading into the shadows. The only chance of saving his neck is by risking his heart–to the one woman from whom he can hide nothing.

Not perfect, but I thought it got the basic idea across. Months later, I got to see the actual cover blurb created by my publisher for the book:

HIS TOUCH HOLDS HER CAPTIVE…

From the ravens circling its spires to the gargoyles adorning its roof, Blackberry Manor looms ominously over its rambling grounds. And behind its doors, amid the flickering shadows and secret passageways, danger lies in wait.

TO HIS EVERY DARK DESIRE…

Evangeline Pemberton has been invited to a party at the sprawling estate of reclusive Gavin Lioncroft, who is rumored to have murdered his parents. Initially, Gavin’s towering presence and brusque manner instill fear in Evangeline…until his rakish features and seductive attentions profoundly arouse her. But when a guest is murdered, Evangeline is torn. Could the man to whom she is so powerfully drawn, also be a ruthless killer?

TOO WICKED TO KISS

You can see which one of us is the professional, right? LOL. I thought they did a great job at evoking the right mood without giving away too much of the story.

What do you think? In your opinion, what makes good (or bad!) back cover copy? How might I have improved my original attempt?

Being shot with a stun gun wasn’t much fun. During her time at the police force Milla had volunteered to be shot with one, so she’d know what it felt like. It hurt. A lot. She’d never carried one, but a lot of her fellow officers had. Now even members of the public had them.

She knew it was a stun gun that her attacker had used on her before tying her up and leaving her wedged under a potting bench. The plastic bag the attacker had put over her head and upper body had torn on the wooden structure. She could see the legs of the bench and the bags of potting soil stacked next to her.

Her hands were tied behind her. She started moving her hands, pulling against the light rope that was holding them together. It was only a matter of time until she’d be able to free her hands. She only hoped it happened before anyone found her. Being trussed up like this was not good for business.

As she worked, she heard the sounds of people talking. She couldn’t tell if they were in the conservatory or just outside, but she could make out most of the words. There were two voices.

“You owe me money. I’m not running a charity, you know.”

“He closed my account. I have to sell some jewelry to pay you.”

“Then do it. Meanwhile, I’m cutting you off.”

“You can’t do that. I need it or I can’t function. And you need me to keep quiet.”

“Be careful. Carla played that game, look what happened to her.”

The voices drifted away.

Milla worked the knots in the ropes around her wrists loose.

The latest in Regency-set Zombie Literature

I’m reading “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith, and wishing I came up with the idea myself. Classic Literature + Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem = Win!

Thus far it’s not full of belly laughs, per se (I’m halfway through and so far I’ve out-and-out guffawed once) but I’ve been audibly snorting/snickering since page one. (Which actually sounds like I’m turning into a horse. Hmm.)

I’ve read the original P&P a bazillion times, and I ♥ zombies and all things ridiculously silly, so for me it’s a winning combination.

How about you? What’s on your nightstand / Kindle / TBR?
