Tell us something fun about how the hero and heroine meet.

The hero and heroine meet when he robs her carriages dressed as a highwayman. One of my favorite book openings ever!

Do you plot your books before you write?

Yes. I’ve tried writing as I go or pantsing, but I have a process now that works for me that includes outlining the major turning points leading up to the “black moment.” I generally plot each scene to the next turning point, write that section, then plot to the next one, etc. Although, with the book I’m working on now, I actually have the Black Moment and Climax plotted out…that might be a first!

What was the first historical romance you read?

The first one I remember reading (I say that because my mom informed me recently that we read a lot of Harlequins back in the day and I don’t remember that!) was ASHES IN THE WIND by Kathleen Woodiwiss. It has this awesome, fabulous reveal in the first 50 pages or so that I did NOT see coming. The heroine in that book is all kinds of awesome.

author photoDid you do any special research for this story?

I love bringing the Victorian Christmas holiday traditions into my seasonal novellas! For this one, I researched the tree trimmings and the popular carols of the time, how often the Serpentine in Hyde Park froze over, and which royal houses of the time boasted non-inheriting Princes. Hope you enjoy these tidbits!

What is your writing cave like?

I write on a treadmill desk, in an effort to keep somewhat healthy as a full time writer. When I go to work, it’s literally "back on the old treadmill." (grins)

What are your favorite historical romance tropes?

I love enemies to lovers and mistaken identities, both of which feature in A Prince for Yuletide. Not to mention a Midwinter Masque!

FREE: The Beauty Bride by Claire Delacroix @CookeDelacroix

Today, I’m thrilled to have Claire Delacroix here on the blog, sharing a FREE historical romance with us!

The Beauty Bride

Madeline’s heart is not for sale…especially not to an outlaw like Rhys FitzHenry. Yet Madeline’s hand has been sold, to none other than this warrior with a price on his head. She decides to run away, though she never dreams that Rhys will pursue her. She does not expect Rhys to woo her with fanciful stories, much less that each of his tales will reveal a scar upon his soul. When Rhys’ past threatens his future, Madeline dares to believe him innocent and risks her all for her newfound love.

What was the best part about writing this story?

I love the stories that Rhys tells to Madeline, and how each one reveals one of his carefully-guarded secrets. I had a wonderful time digging through volumes of folk tales to make the perfect choice each time. My favorite is the story of Gelert.

Do you have a ‘call’ story?

I sold my first book in 1992 to Tracy Farrell at Harlequin Historicals. It was a medieval romance called Romance of the Rose. I was away for a few days when she called and left a message, so I had time to squeal before calmly calling her back and trying to sound professional. (My friend wanted to know how I could be certain what she wanted, but I knew she’d only call to make an offer for the book.) Tracy was a wonderful editor and I learned so much from her.

Do you have favorite historical romance comfort reads?

I love Regency romances. I love when they have that perfect balance of sexual tension, witty dialogue and a sense of the period. I only recently wrote my first Regency (a novella called Something Wicked This Way Comes) and I’m thinking about writing more. As much as I love my knights and highlanders, I enjoyed my little visit to the Regency.
