NEW RELEASE: The Secret of my Seduction by Caroline Linden @CaroLinden

Today, I’m thrilled to have Caroline Linden here on the blog, sharing a brand new historical romance release with us!

book coverThe Secret of my Seduction

No one suspects plain, sensible Bathsheba Crawford of being the anonymous author of a wickedly scandalous series of naughty novels. But she is.

When she approaches her publisher, rakish Liam MacGregor, with an indecent proposal, he’s shocked. But he accepts.

The rules for their affair are simple: complete secrecy, and no romantic attachment. But the more they see each other…the more pleasure they find in each other’s arms… the harder it is to follow the rules.

author photoWhat was your inspiration for this story?

Readers requested it! My previous book (Six Degrees of Scandal) ended with a woman sitting down to try writing a sexy romance novel, more or less. I thought that was the end of the whole series, but several readers wrote to me asking what happened to her. And on a long layover in the airport, a story idea sprouted and grew.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

No, not at all! I studied math in college, which I personally found very romantic since I met my husband in the math department…when he swept me off my feet by asking if I’d like to work the problem set together. I fell like a ton of bricks. It’s all thanks to him that I know what happily-ever-after looks like, which only proves that math is vitally romantic, when done right.

What are your favorite historical romance tropes?

I really love a good frenemies/enemies to lovers story. That and marriage of convenience stories. Both situations force the hero and heroine to confront their own (often wrong) ideas about themselves and about each other. If they have to work together to solve a mystery of some sort, I am 100% hooked. I’m sure it’s all because of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

author photoDid you do any special research for this story?

I had to find a good poison that would work. In my dedication I had to thank my sons who are never concerned finding a book of poisons on the kitchen table.

Do you write every day?

I try to write every day but with a full time day job, there are days I don’t want to look at a computer screen. I tend to get the majority of my writing done on weekends. So I tried to take care of the other stuff (cleaning, yard work, etc) on week nights.

Who was your first auto-buy historical romance author?

Can I have more than one? If not, I would have to say Johanna Lindsay. I loved that fact that she wrote different locations and time periods. You don’t see that much any more from authors.

Patience Worthington, the heroine. She’d had such a bad marriage the first time and it was clear she was suffering.

How much research do you do?

A lot. Customs, mores, clothing, transportation, buildings, you name it. If it appears in the book I’ve researched it.

Who was your first auto-buy historical romance author?

In historical romance, Georgette Heyer. I love her characters, witt, and attention to detail. Although, because she believed Barbara Cartland was copying her, Ms. Heyer would include one or two facts that were not correct in each book.

Series Name: Dangerous Series
Genre: Regency Romance
Heat level: One or two love scenes

author photoTell us something fun about the heroines.

These heroines are nobody’s cupcakes. Brave, intelligent, and resourceful, they all have special skills. Two have work they value. Three are older than typical regency heroines. Lily, a diplomat’s daughter, is a linguist. Catherine manages the family’s farm. Georgiana is a classical scholar. Nora has enough courage to take on powerful men in a country in which she doesn’t speak a word of the language.

How much research do you do?

I do more than I should! I go off to answer one question and end up wandering down various side roads. Historical detail and setting enhance the stories, but I always end up with piles of research I can’t use. Most of it ends up on my History Imagined blog.

author photoWhat was the hardest part about writing this story?

My hero has a learning disability: dyscalculia, a brain-based condition that makes learning or understanding math difficult. Portraying a character with this condition, without making him appear like a victim of his disability, took a lot of research, and a lot of hard thinking and planning.

Do you write every day?

I try to write five days a week, Monday through Friday, in the mornings. Some days that’s harder to do than others! But I put my butt in the chair…

Who was your first auto-buy historical romance author?

Courtney Milan. I love the combination of her humor, her respect for history, and her determination to portray women who ACT, rather than women who are acted upon. And I love that her heroes love and respect her heroines for their strengths, not for their weaknesses.

author photoTell us something fun about the relationship conflict.

I’m not sure how many "one night stands" happened in the old west but this one was super fun to write. I really liked that Katie was more the aggressor when it came to their passion and that it was Scott who felt the responsibility. That it was Scott who demanded they do the right thing.

Do you plot your books before you write?

Lol. Not much. With this one I knew they’d sleep together immediately and that his past would be the conflict between them. Other than that, the book tends to come as I write. I find it really hard to plot ahead. If I know too much before I start then I’m bored and don’t feel I need to tell the story. Of course, this way is much more stressful but I also think it’s more fun.

Who was your first auto-buy historical romance author?

Sandra Brown. I LOVE Another Dawn. Love that story. And also Hidden Fires. Sandra Brown sold me on historical westerns.

author photoWhat was your inspiration for this story?

This was my first Nanowrimo book. I originally wrote it to be part of my Marriage Game series, but I didn’t get it finished in time for the series chronology. So it became the first book of The Worthingtons. My inspiration was Matt Worthington. He had been in the first two books, and it was clear he was looking for a lady to marry. Fortunately, he found her.

How much research do you do?

Tons. Especially for this book. The premise hinges on laws specific to the Regency regarding child custody. Many people are surprised to know that married women could not have guardianship of a minor child. This applied to their own children as well. The concept was just not there. That, of course, was in addition to the clothing, horses, houses, carriages…

What are your favorite historical romance tropes?

I love the compromised into marriage trope, and I probably use it too often. Although, I’m in the process of reading some of Amanda Quick’s older Regencies, and she uses it quite a bit as well. It’s just so much fun and there are so many ways one can fall afoul of Polite Society’s rules.

author photoWhat was your inspiration for this story?

I was married in a castle in the Highlands. On my honeymoon, we scoured every inch of both the Scotland and England territories I write about. I knew that one day, I had to write a story about a Highland lass who detested the English, only to be forced to marry one, and an English lord, desperate to refill his empty coffers, ends up with a Scot!

How much research do you do?

I dearly love researching my historical novels as much as I love writing them! Not only do I lose myself in both processes, I actually learn a lot about my characters as they come alive in the setting that the research produces. I likely spend far too much time doing research. One might say I’m addicted to it.

blog image

How did you get hooked on historical romance?

I became an inveterate reader at a very young age, and would gobble up anything I could get my hands on. Since I could only borrow 3 books at a time from the library, and could devour them on any given Saturday, I would sneak books off my mom’s beside table and read them under the covers by flashlight. I got into gothic romance (Mary Stewart and the like) that way.

Tell us something fun about how the hero and heroine meet.

The hero and heroine meet when he robs her carriages dressed as a highwayman. One of my favorite book openings ever!

Do you plot your books before you write?

Yes. I’ve tried writing as I go or pantsing, but I have a process now that works for me that includes outlining the major turning points leading up to the “black moment.” I generally plot each scene to the next turning point, write that section, then plot to the next one, etc. Although, with the book I’m working on now, I actually have the Black Moment and Climax plotted out…that might be a first!

What was the first historical romance you read?

The first one I remember reading (I say that because my mom informed me recently that we read a lot of Harlequins back in the day and I don’t remember that!) was ASHES IN THE WIND by Kathleen Woodiwiss. It has this awesome, fabulous reveal in the first 50 pages or so that I did NOT see coming. The heroine in that book is all kinds of awesome.
